David Baute

David Baute is a filmmaker and a reference environmental film festival in the Canary Islands, is artistic director of FICMEC (Canary Islands International Environmental Film Festival) and for a while also directed the documentary festival MiradasDoc, promoting works based on the vision of southern countries.

He trained in film management at the Havana International Film School (EICTV) and various professional centers in Spain. As director, he has signed several outstanding documentaries, including Ella(s) (2010), Milagros (2017) eta Éxodo climático (2020). Ella(s) (2010), Milagros (2017) eta Éxodo climático 2020. The latter won the Espiga Verde at the Seminci festival in Valladolid.

His last job is an animated feature film: Mariposas Negras (2024) Mariposas Negras 2024), premiered at the famous Annecy animation festival. This work, which offers a poetic and feminine view of climate migration, has been a success: it received the 2025 Goya Award in the category of Best Animation Film, as well as the Forqué, Gaudí, Platinum and Quirino Awards.

Baute's committed cinema focuses on climate emergency, forced migration, and human rights, always treated with great aesthetic and narrative sensitivity.

Beyond creative work, it coordinates numerous cultural projects, such as Área Garachico, and the itinerant HipoKritas initiative, Escénicos Cuadernos or Cinemóbil, a travelling cinema that operates through renewable energies. He is also a producer of creative youth and has been a jury member of international festivals and markets.
